23. Troubleshooting bubbles, tackiness, delamination and appearance

1. Bubbles: identify the gas or moisture source

Bubbles can occur within the coating or at the substrate interface. Internal bubbles call for checks of mixing air, thickness and material condition. Interfacial blisters call for checks of moisture, outgassing, contamination and bonding. Consider timing, location and cross-sections together.

Bubbles confined to repaired areas may have a different cause from widespread floor blistering. Do not immediately add topcoat: it can hide evidence without removing the cause. Establish the affected area before selecting repairs.

2. Tackiness or unusual cure: trace the mixing process

Localized tackiness can indicate incomplete mixing. Widespread slow cure also calls for checks of ratio, temperature, product condition and environment. Contamination, incorrect thinning or component substitution can look similar. Examine weighing records and retained samples rather than rely only on recollections of normal practice.

A cured-looking surface with abnormal material below can involve localized thickness or other conditions. Confirm that specified curing conditions have been reached. Failed areas require a sound repair method; additional waiting does not guarantee recovery.

3. Delamination: locate the failure interface

Separation from concrete, separation between coating layers and failure within the substrate are different diagnostic cases. Retain detached samples and record what remains on each face, using targeted tests where needed.

Causes may include preparation, intercoat contamination, recoat timing, moisture or incompatibility. Appearance alone does not establish that responsibility lies entirely with the material or entirely with application. Keep observations, evidence and inferred causes distinct.

4. Uneven matting: check dispersion and application differences

Uneven gloss can reflect insufficient premixing, inconsistent consumption, wet-edge work or repeated finishing. Different absorption or surface conditions below can also contribute. Compare under consistent lighting and viewing angles before attributing an optical change to the material.

Trial the repair method. Local recoating can create another gloss boundary; treating a complete area within natural divisions may sometimes be more uniform. Choose according to defect severity and the approved sample.

5. Irregular hammered texture: compare with the approved process

For excessively large, small, interrupted or sagging patterns, check material temperature, elapsed time after mixing, consumption and tool settings. Component orientation and airflow also matter; formulation should not be the only suspect.

If exposed substrate, pinholes or thin areas accompany the pattern problem, address protective continuity first. A hammered finish is a controlled decorative effect, not a reason to accept every surface abnormality.
