15. Polyaspartic hammered finishes: texture and protection
1. Hammered finish describes appearance
A polyaspartic hammered-finish topcoat aims to create a texture resembling hammered metal. It does not require striking the coating with a hammer, nor does the texture imply unlimited impact resistance.
For Junaimei product selection, this finish can be discussed for equipment appearance, decorative surfaces and compatible protection. Confirm suitable substrates, locations and performance for the actual grade. The appearance name alone does not establish suitability for every metal or exterior environment.
2. Hammered texture differs from orange peel and random defects
Hammered, orange-peel, sand-textured and wrinkled surfaces are all nonsmooth, but have different forms and objectives. An intended hammered finish should have agreed pattern characteristics and reasonable consistency. Uncontrolled craters, exposed substrate, pinholes and localized sagging still need investigation.
Acceptance should examine pattern size, distribution, continuity, edge coverage and color, rather than simply the presence of surface relief. A clear reference panel helps prevent defects being accepted as effects or intended texture being rejected as a defect.
3. How hammered patterns form
Traditional hammered coatings can involve surface-tension differences, component compatibility and flow; some formulations use metallic-effect pigments. In polyaspartics, pattern formation must also fit the cure speed. The desired pattern must develop before flow stops, without excessive flow erasing it or causing vertical sag. This illustrates the interaction between appearance and reaction control; it does not identify a particular brand’s proprietary formulation.
4. What surface imperfections can texture conceal?
Texture may visually soften minor unevenness, but its hiding ability is limited and is not repair. Rust, cracks, weld spatter, detached areas and deep depressions require preparation. Texture cannot prevent unresolved substrate defects from developing.
For equipment housings, distinguish cosmetic unevenness from structural or corrosion problems. Appropriate filling and finishing can address the former, while the latter requires treatment of the cause. Texture should not replace preparation in an effort to shorten the schedule.
5. Why consistency matters during application
Spraying method, tool settings, material temperature, application viscosity, wet-film thickness and work rhythm can affect the pattern. Horizontal panels and vertical components flow differently, so a laboratory flat-panel result may not transfer directly to equipment with edges and corners.
Make representative samples with the actual method, including edges, corners or curves. Maintain batch and application consistency. Repeatedly adding coating to exaggerate local texture can lead to excessive thickness or uneven appearance.
6. Can hammered topcoats be used on floors?
Texture alone does not establish floor suitability. Floors require evaluation of abrasion, cleaning, slip resistance, wheel loads and appearance after texture wears. A grade designed for an equipment housing may not have appropriate mechanical and maintenance properties for flooring.
If a project requires the effect on a floor, obtain support for that use for the selected grade and validate it on a sample. Examine dirt retention in valleys, cleaning-machine effectiveness and whether worn texture remains acceptable.
7. Plan repair before installation
Local repairs can show color differences even on smooth surfaces. Hammered finishes add the difficulty of matching texture. Aging can change the original color, gloss and surface, so a repair with the same product may still be visible.
Agree on repair boundaries such as complete panels, natural divisions or component edges, instead of assuming any small patch will be invisible. Batch and application records assist later repairs but cannot guarantee indefinitely perfect matching.
