21. Four illustrative coating systems: turning needs into layer design

These hypothetical situations explain layer functions and selection order. Thicknesses, ratios, operations and opening times must be defined for the actual materials and site.

1. Exposed waterproofing on a concrete terrace

Assume a generally sound terrace with localized dormant cracks, exposed to sun and rain with occasional maintenance access. First investigate crack behavior, drainage and drain connections. Moving cracks or structural abnormalities require a different treatment rather than continued use of this example.

A possible approach is substrate and detail repair, compatible primer, a waterproofing layer suited to the movement requirement and, where required, an exposed protective topcoat. The primer bonds the system, the functional layer provides waterproofing and movement accommodation, and the finish addresses exposure and surface use. Whether a separate topcoat is necessary depends on the selected system.

Verify complete detailing, effective thickness, intercoat bonding and appropriate water testing. If matte appearance is desired, confirm compatibility with the flexible layer below; a hard decorative topcoat should not restrict required movement. Define maintenance access and subsequent protection as well.

2. Refurbishing an indoor garage with an existing epoxy coating

Assume worn areas but uncertain overall adhesion and moisture conditions. Inspect by zone to decide which areas can remain and which need removal, rather than overcoat everything immediately. Address persistent moisture first.

Retained areas may need cleaning, mechanical preparation, localized repair, a bonding layer where necessary and a validated compatible wear-resistant finish. Areas stripped to concrete need a redesigned primer and intermediate system. The zones must ultimately form a stable, consistent surface.

For a polyaspartic matte finish, check wheel wear, cleaning and wet slip resistance, with separate ramp assessment. Include retained coating and repairs in the trial to compare appearance and adhesion. Allow time for preparation, recoating and vehicle return to service.

3. Recoating outdoor steel equipment

Assume outdoor equipment in a general industrial atmosphere with localized rust but no continuous immersion. Investigate corrosion severity, contamination, existing coating type and inaccessible locations. Decide whether gaps or backs need dismantling and how they will be inspected.

A candidate system may include specified metal preparation, a compatible anticorrosive primer, an intermediate layer where exposure requires it and a validated polyaspartic finish. Layer thickness and coat count come from system design. Rapid curing is not a reason to omit necessary anticorrosive layers.

For a hammered appearance, confirm pattern formation on a representative component with edges, along with coverage and repair methods. Use the approved sample for appearance acceptance, and check preparation, continuity and specified thickness for protection.

4. A low-gloss decorative floor in an indoor display space

Assume mainly pedestrian traffic, a preference for soft color and reduced reflections, and routine cleaning. Check flatness, moisture, joints and local loads, then choose base layers, decorative layers and a clear or pigmented low-gloss finish.

Use the planned base color and lighting in the trial. Examine reflections from different directions, color changes and overlaps. Test actual cleaners and tools for polished patches, scuffs and difficult-to-clean areas. Include moving furniture and transporting exhibits in operational planning.

Select a Junaimei matte topcoat because the trial confirms its appearance and service suitability, rather than because “matte” implies a higher grade. A move toward pronounced texture requires renewed assessment of flooring suitability; an equipment hammered finish is not an automatic substitute.

5. The shared decision order

Establish substrate and defects, then exposure and loading. Define the main function before choosing appearance. Finally fix the grade, sample and acceptance requirements. Changes to primer, topcoat, color or tools may require revalidation.

This avoids buying a coating first and then forcing the site to fit it. For complex projects, record important decisions as design changes so procurement, application and acceptance use the same current information.
