26. Environmental considerations and application safety

1. Low odor does not mean no exposure risk

Odor intensity does not fully describe chemical risk. Isocyanate-containing components require attention to skin, eye and respiratory exposure; spraying can generate inhalable droplets. Read the actual product’s safety data sheet and plan ventilation, isolation and suitable protection for the method. A barely noticeable odor during rolling does not remove safety-management requirements, and one generic mask is not suitable for every application condition.

2. Evaluate application and cured service separately

Unmixed components, reacting coatings and fully cured products are different states. Application safety information, indoor emissions testing and specialist contact testing answer different questions. A safety data sheet does not replace all evidence for the finished product’s use.

For interiors, check relevant emissions or restricted-substance information and complete specified curing and ventilation. Schools, hospitals and food-related spaces still require assessment of the actual use and its requirements, rather than a blanket suitability claim based on the building type.

3. Handle residues and cleaning waste according to their nature

Leftover components, used tools, contaminated packaging and cleaning liquid require handling based on composition and condition. Follow product safety information and applicable management requirements. Avoid indiscriminate disposal or mixing with incompatible materials.

Suitable batch sizes and work planning also reduce waste. This has economic and environmental value. Environmental performance depends on effectively converting material into a compliant coating as well as on the formulation itself.
